Aberrant Drain Appears in Brooklyn September 19th

Walking down a Brooklyn sidewalk, the view ahead suddenly pulls into itself, twisting the horizon in an urban mirage. “Aberrant Drain” by Kathryne Hall debuts in The Case of the Curious Pedestrian, curated by Christina Vassallo, on September 19th in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Sketch for Aberrant Drain

“Aberrant Drain” is part of a series of temporary art installations in New York City that subvert common urban elements and the experience of public space. These interventions are designed to provoke as well as entertain, leading the viewer to question the stability and function of the urban environment, consider the mundane as a subject for sculpture, or simply to smile in amusement.

Date and location: September 19th, 2pm-6pm Southeast corner of Myrtle Avenue at Clinton Avenue.

“Aberrant Drain” is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council.

Aberrant Sidewalk

Sidewalk aberrations form in cities when there is sufficient instability and ability to suspend disbelief in the lower atmosphere and among the mass population.   Instability refers to global and local economic and political conditions that are increasingly unpredictable and negative.  Ability to suspend disbelief increases during a sustained period of socio-economic turmoil.  Declining faith in future stability is thought to cause tectonic shifts in perception, which coincide with the appearance of aberrations in the infrastructure.

Sidewalk aberrations of this kind are predicted to occur in New York City throughout the five boroughs in the warmer months of 2009. Viewer comments are listed below.  Locations and times will be updated on www.aberrationtracking.com.

Tubisms: Brooklyn Bus Tour

In this project a double-decker bus entwined with tubes, that move up and down in a flapping motion, circles Prospect Park, stopping for 30 minutes at each corner of the park while assistants and I engage with viewers and solicit responses. This is the next event in my artist-initiated, independent project series, “Tubisms,” that began in 2003. The “Tubisms” series installs tube sculptures in unexpected places to ask viewers to question the expected and to provoke with humor and uncertainty.  By focusing on the invasive and absurd, this series asks viewers to examine their urban experience.  After my successful 2007 “Tubisms: Cars” project, I am excited to now work towards this new mobile phase of the “Tubisms” series.
